The Goldstein Packaging Laboratory
The activities in the Goldstein Packaging Laboratory comprise of two major areas:
1. Research and Development
2. Service to Industry.
1. Research and Development
The focus in recent years has been on developing and characterization of “Active Packages” as well as Package/Product Interaction.
Among the different kinds of Active Packages, Antimicrobial (AM) packaging (and primarily those containing natural AM compounds) and Oxygen Scavenging were studied most.
Packaging/Product interaction includes studies on the effects of the package on the product (shelf life, off-odors off-flavors) and on the effect of the product on the package (properties retention).
2. Services to industry
a) Consultation on all aspects of packaging, including troubleshooting.
b) Evaluation of the suitability of packages for contact with food.
c) Evaluation of packages for their suitability for dangerous materials and for fragile products.
d) Evaluation of gases (Oxygen, water vapor, and other gases) permeability.
e) Evaluation of the mechanical and physical properties evaluation of packages and packaging materials.

The Russell Berrie Nanoparticles and Nanometric Systems Characterization Center
The Russel Berrie Nanoparticles and Nanometric Systems Characterization Center NNSCC located at the faculty of Biotechnology & Food Engineering Technion (1st floor).
The center provides accessibility and support for variety of research facilities and techniques of nanometric and colloidal systems, as well as support academic teaching and relevant industrial projects.
The center offers a wide range of equipment for testing and research goals:
Particle size analyzers based on dynamic light scattering (DLS) and on laser diffraction technique.
Thermal analysis: DSC – Differential Scanning Calorimetry,
Mechanical Testing: Universal Materials Testing Machine, Micro Scale tester, Rheometer.
Atomic Force Microscope – (AFM) measurement of surface topography and other related properties of solid surfaces, with atomic resolution with option of experiments in a controlled liquid environment
X-ray diffraction (XRD) – Scientific tool used in order to identify the atomic and molecular arrangement of crystalline molecules within the crystal structure.
Spectroscopy- Multimode microplate reader with double monochromator top&bottom FL (200-1000nm), Abs (200-1000nm), LUM (360-670nm) coming soon!
